Some plots are showing yields of 5 to 15 quintals. Born in the Middle Ages, Franck Olivier, disgusted by the results of his summer harvest, quips, “We should have planted rice.” According to his two sons in Vitrac-Saint-Vincent, in Charente, this farmer has not experienced such a dark year in the 44 years he has worked. A bad winter and spring filled the fields, delaying planting, encouraging weeds, diseases, and ultimately ruining the harvests. The chairman of the Regional Union in Charente explained.
Some farmers have planted crops twice or thrice, they have tied up their tractors, and they will not harvest some or the other. “For us, the sentence will be twofold: we have costs but not harvests,” he summed up, bitterly, after losing 30% of his crops, “at least.”
