A school for the evacuees of Kiryat Shmona opens in Eilat

A temporary school for about 300 1st-12th grade students from Kiryat Shmona and the northern settlements hosted by Eilat was established today (Thursday) in the city. The school was established in a building adapted to educational needs with budgetary investment from the Ministry of Education, with the assistance of the Eilat Municipality and other partners. At the opening of the school, Minister of Education Yoav Kish took part, saying: “I am very grateful to the mayor of Eilat and the mayor of Kiryat Shmona for your work, without you we could not have done it. We have built a model of cooperation between an evacuee city, a receiving city and the Ministry of Education.”

Lankeri thanked the head of the Department of Education for the city of Eilat, Gila Nagar, for the assistance. “As a receiving city, we did everything from day one to give you a feeling of home, as much as possible. In Eilat there are about 11.5 thousand children in the education system and during the war we took in another 15 thousand children. We opened every institution and every possible building to enable studies, activities here and routine as much as possible. I am full of appreciation for my residents who mobilized in a great show of solidarity and responded to almost every need that arose. This is our duty and we will continue to do this until you return home with God’s help in peace and when security prevails in the north, the south and the entire State of Israel. As long as you are here we are here for you.” .

“Thank you, the brave and heroic students,” said the mayor of Kiryat Shmona, Avihai Stern. “I’m scared too. But I walk around among you and see your resilience and strength. From the moment the war broke out, the most important thing that stood before our eyes was maintaining routine with an emphasis on education and I am very grateful to the mayor of Eilat, we are privileged to be hosted by you, the education staff, the minister of education.”

Since the beginning of the war, the city of Eilat has taken in about 15,000 students from the surrounding communities, from the south and the north, who have been taken in by dozens of educational centers in the hotels, in the city’s schools, in the buildings of the academic institutions and in buildings that have been specially converted for educational needs. At the same time, a school is currently being established in a designated complex, in the northern entrance of the city, where classrooms will be placed for the benefit of the students who were evacuated from their homes in Otef.
