Traffic jam at sea: A cruise ship got stuck this morning (Monday) in the Suez Canal near the city of Al-Kantara in Egypt, leading to the blocking of the navigation and traffic lanes in the canal. Following the incident, tugboats arrived in the area, and they are now trying to rescue the stranded ship.

According to local media reports, the stranded ship was flying the flag of the Marshall Islands, and was on its way to join a convoy of ships making its way south. At this stage it is not clear what led to the ship being stuck in the canal, which serves as a sea passage between the Mediterranean Sea and Europe and the Indian Ocean and the Far East.

This is not the first time that a ship got stuck and led to the paralysis of maritime traffic in the Suez Canal. The most famous event of this type occurred in March 2021, when a ship called “Evergreen” sank in the canal and fell on its side. As a result, the Suez Canal was blocked for maritime traffic for 6 days, while 12 ships and dozens of bulldozers worked to rescue the ship, which weighed 220 tons.

The historic blockade caused a delay in the passage of goods worth millions of dollars, and even led to an increase in oil prices in the world. The company that owns the ship stated that “We sincerely apologize for causing great concern to the ships and the economic factors associated with them.”
