Two alleged members of the Mara Salvatrucha (MS13) died this Wednesday after “attacking” elements of the Special Security Forces in an armed confrontation in a municipality in western El Salvador, reported the National Civil Police (PNC). The event, according to the source, occurred in the town of Juayúa, in the department of Sonsonate, more than 99 kilometers from the capital San Salvador.

The PNC, which did not provide the identities of the deceased or their ages, noted that “the firearms used by the criminals were left at the scene” and added that “the officers are unharmed“.

The Legislative Assembly, with a large pro-government majority, recently approved the eighteenth extension of an emergency regime, implemented to combat gangs, with the justification that “the threat of a possible grouping” of gang structures persists. According to official figures, this measure has left more than 72,600 people detained, whom the Government accuses of belonging to gangs, while humanitarian organizations report more than 5,000 “direct victims” of human rights violations, mainly for arbitrary arrests. Of the more than 72,600 detainees, at least 7,000 have been released, as stated last August by Minister Villatoro.

El Salvador accounts 95 homicides between January and early May, as pointed out at the time by the official representative Rebeca Santos. The Security authorities do not report as homicides the deaths of alleged gang members in “confrontations” with elements of the Police and the Army.
