“One cop, one bullet.” A sign calling for the murder of police officers was observed during the demonstration “against police violence” in Besançon on Saturday, the Doubs prefecture reported, condemning it “firmly”. Numerous anti-police slogans were also chanted during this demonstration which brought together 470 people, according to a count from the prefecture. “The police are mobilized day after day on our territory to ensure the security and tranquility of all our fellow citizens,” recalled the prefect.
More than 31,000 protesters across the country
Some 31,300 people demonstrated throughout the country (including 9,000 in Paris), according to the Ministry of the Interior, and around 80,000 (including 15,000 in Paris), according to the CGT and LFI. In the capital, after a calm start, a pre-procession of hundreds of hooded individuals formed, damaging the windows of bank branches and stoned a police car. It was in this context that a police officer pointed his weapon at demonstrators.
The Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin sent a letter of support to the police and gendarmes on Friday and called on the prefects to issue a ban order if necessary and report messages “carrying insulting and outrageous slogans against the institutions of the Republic, the police and the gendarmerie likely to fall within the scope of the law.
