The end of 2023 has a nice surprise in store. While experts expected a clear slowdown in economic activity in France, it was more sustained than expected in December, according to the latest monthly economic report from the Banque de France published Wednesday evening.

As a result, the increase in GDP in the fourth quarter of 2023 could be a little stronger than expected. “It could approach 0.2%, instead of 0.1% anticipated in November,” indicated the monetary institution’s chief economist, Olivier Garnier, presenting the survey. In mid-December, INSEE was even more pessimistic and expected activity to stagnate over the last three months of the past year.
