A Johnny Hallyday all in bronze and in real size: this is the project that the Desperados biker club and the town of Fréjus (Var) are currently bringing to fruition. Not far from Saint-Tropez, where the rocker had his habits, a large 1.85 m sculpture should be erected by the sea, in a square which will be transformed to accommodate the statue of the idol.
“We have been working on this project for two years. Two years looking for a place on the Côte d’Azur that would allow Johnny’s fans to come and pay their respects easily and at a lower cost. For all those who cannot go to Saint-Barth to see his grave,” explains Pascal Dufour, international secretary of Desperados. “It was Johnny himself who founded our biker club in 1992. We owed him that! »
They chose the sculptor Olivier Delobel
If the Gulf of Saint-Tropez was the first choice for bikers, the town of Fréjus, managed by David Rachline (RN), quickly established itself. “She said yes very quickly and helped us, through an agreement, to finance the project: 50,000 euros. » The sculpture will represent the flamboyant Johnny of 1993, in electric blue stage outfit and smiling. “He’s the Johnny from the Parc des Princes concert that we all have in mind,” confides an impatient fan.
The sculptor has been chosen. The artist Olivier Delobel has already created statues of Charles Trénet and Georges Brassens. He is now attacking the national myth. “We will be very particular about the work on the facial features, the eyes… Too many statues do not represent him as he was,” insist the bikers. If all goes well, fans will be able to see the result next summer. And take a selfie next to their idol in real size.
