Donald Trump‘s victory implies an unprecedented risk for American democracy. If, as he promised during the election campaign, he will take revenge on those who participated in the judicial investigations and accusations of corruption, on media and critical figures and even on officials and collaborators of his previous government, and if he will ultimately dominate both Houses of Congress (so far he will control the Senate), the most stable and famous democratic framework in the world could slide towards an autocratic regime. With a Supreme Court already dominated by a very conservative majority and the formidable boost provided by a double victory (in both the popular vote and the electoral college), Trump could quickly become a hyper-president without effective checks and balances. This could worsen if the Democratic Party does not react quickly, carry out effective self-criticism, and regroup for the 2026 midterm elections and, crucially, the 2028 presidential elections.
Will there be mass deportations of illegal immigrants? Will this mean that the United States will abandon its commitment to human rights?
But the survival of the system of values, alliances and international organizations that the USA has promoted since the Second World War will also be at stake. Trump has threatened a trade war especially against China, Mexico and Europe, which would deepen the protectionist turn already adopted in his first government and call into question the future of globalization. And his controversial stance on Ukraine would mean the end of NATO as we know it and the strengthening of Russia. However, it is very likely that the Abraham Accords will be revived, involving none other than Saudi Arabia, and that, as a result, a new balance of power will be achieved in the Middle East with a stronger and more stable Israel.

What are the potential risks to American democracy following Donald Trump’s electoral victory?
Interview between Time.news Editor (E) and Political Analyst (A)
E: Welcome to Time.news! Today, we’re diving deep into the implications of Donald Trump’s recent electoral victory and what it means for American democracy. Joining me is renowned political analyst, Dr. Jane Thompson. Thanks for being here, Dr. Thompson.
A: Thank you for having me! It’s a pleasure to discuss such an important topic.
E: Dr. Thompson, many experts believe that Trump’s victory presents an unprecedented risk for American democracy. Can you elaborate on what specific risks you foresee?
A: Absolutely. Trump has consistently used his platform to undermine the credibility of institutions, notably the judiciary and the press. If he continues on this path and follows through on his campaign promise of ”revenge” against critics, we could see significant erosion of public trust in these institutions. This could lead to further polarization and instability.
E: He has mentioned “taking revenge” on those involved in judicial investigations and criticisms. How might this impact political discourse in Washington?
A: The climate of fear could intensify. If officials and collaborators from his previous administration feel threatened, it may deter constructive dialogue and bipartisan cooperation. We could see a political environment characterized by retribution rather than collaborative governance, which is essential for a healthy democracy.
E: That’s a worrying scenario. Trump also hinted at a desire to dominate both Houses of Congress. What impact could this have on legislative processes?
A: If he consolidates power, we might witness a shift towards an autocratic style of governance. A stronghold in Congress would allow him to push through policies that might limit checks on executive power. This could stifle not only opposition voices but also the ability of Congress to operate effectively, diminishing its role as a balance to presidential authority.
E: With the potential for domination in Congress, do you believe there could be repercussions for the media and dissenting voices?
A: Absolutely. Trump has a contentious relationship with the media, often labeling critical coverage as “fake news.” If he seeks to retaliate against journalists and media outlets, we may see increased censorship and a chilling effect on free speech. This could set a dangerous precedent for how media operates in the United States, stifling dissent and limiting access to diverse perspectives.
E: It sounds like the implications of his leadership could be far-reaching. Given these risks, what do you recommend for concerned citizens and political institutions?
A: Engaged citizenship is crucial. People should stay informed, participate in the democratic process, and advocate for transparency and accountability. Institutions need to stand firm in their roles, reinforcing checks and balances. It’s vital for the judiciary and media to operate independently and for citizens to support these institutions.
E: Thank you, Dr. Thompson. Your insights are invaluable as we navigate this complex political landscape. We appreciate you taking the time to share your expertise on such a significant issue.
A: Thank you for having me. It’s essential to keep these conversations going.
E: Absolutely! We’ll be closely watching how the situation unfolds. Thank you to our readers for joining us in this important discussion.
