The fact that people travel a lot in the summer and can take the virus home from their holiday country seems a logical explanation, but that is not all.
Positive tests increased
The number of people who tested positive has risen this week for the first time since March. RIVM reports an increase from seven thousand to more than nine thousand positive tests. The number of hospital admissions is also increasing.
Three new species
At the same time, three new species of omikron have been identified: BA.4, BA.5 and BA.2.12.1. They will already prevail this month. They have the property that they can infect people who have already had corona and/or have been vaccinated.
Not illogical
Epidemiologist Susan van den Hof of the RIVM says to the Volkskrant: “I don’t want to cause panic at all. But what we’re seeing could be the start of an uptick in infections. That wouldn’t be illogical either: the variants that we see emerging spread a little more easily.”
Not very sick
Reassurance: Most people don’t get very sick from it. Vaccination and previous infection(s) still protect well against the disease getting out of hand.
