It will be held from July 10 to 14 at the ULE, the MUSAC and the Cerezales Foundation and will address artistic and technical interconnections and multidisciplinary languages.

The possible relationships between art, science, and nature will be the subject of reflection and study in a Summer Course at the University of León (ULE) within its 2023 program, which is presented under the title ‘Bioart’. This training proposal will take place from July 10 to 14 in different spaces of the faculties of Education and Biological and Environmental Sciences of the ULE, at the MUSAC (Museum of Contemporary Art of Castilla y León), and at the Cerezales Antonino y Cinia Foundation .

Marta Eva García González and Estrella Alfaro Saiz, director and curator of the LEB Herbarium of the ULE, direct this seminar that offers 25 places and includes a duration of 37.5 hours. Both professors emphasize that the main objectives consist of introducing the participants to the concepts of the relationships between Art, Nature, Science and Society, through conferences and workshops with an eminently practical methodology. In this way, the artistic and experimental uses of multidisciplinary processes, techniques and languages will be shown, as well as collaborations with professionals from other disciplines (natural sciences, biology, etc.).

People who participate in ‘Bioart’ will have the opportunity to learn about the methodology, terminology, materials, tools and instruments related to scientific illustration and other disciplines that relate nature and art, and will also be informed about different projects, examples and trends that relate art , nature and science. For this, in the different scenarios in which the seminar will take place, a series of workshops on botanical and nature illustration, talks on image ecologies and concrete experiences on science and art and some collaborative projects such as EducArte, from the artist Carlos Cuenllas. The idea is to contribute to understanding that artistic manifestations are conditioned by the natural, scientific, social and cultural environment and by the functional, symbolic, aesthetic and communicative aspects to which one wants to respond.

The seminar, organized by the Herbal Research Service LEB- Jaime Andrés Rodríguez ULE, the Department of Biodiversity and Environmental Management with the collaboration of the León School of Art and Superior Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Assets, MUSAC and the Antonino and Cinia Foundation , will be taught in the morning and afternoon. In addition, participants will be able to validate 1.8 ECTS credits after attending at least 80% of the teaching hours offered.
