Watch your body

Surgeon N. Markevičius claims that venous diseases are betrayed by the external appearance. Small or large capillaries may appear on the legs, veins become more prominent – this signals that the body’s blood flow is changing.

“If you sit or stand for a long time, you may feel heaviness in your legs, your legs may start to swell more often, or you may experience convulsions and itching during the night. Such and similar symptoms, which were not felt before, mean one thing – venous blood circulation disorders in the legs. If you experience similar symptoms, you should consult a doctor,” urges the surgeon.

According to the doctor, most venous disorders are caused by genetics, as much as 80 percent. vein diseases are hereditary. If someone in the family had problems with venous circulation, there is a very high probability that it will be passed on to the next generation. However, there are also cases where the spread of venous diseases increases rapidly because people do not move much, are overweight or have hormonal diseases.

The most important thing is to visit the doctor on time

According to the surgeon, several technologies can help identify vascular diseases, but the first and most important step is a doctor’s assessment. During it, it is decided whether it is a medical disorder or a cosmetic one.

“Vascular ultrasound is usually performed to detect diseases. During it, the size of blood vessels, lumens and valve function are evaluated. First of all, venous blood flow is assessed by ultrasound, and it is determined whether there are any changes – valve insufficiency. If it is detected, we recommend an operation”, says N. Markevičius.

According to the doctor, laser vein surgeries are safe and reliable. After the operation, the patient will not disturb his daily routine, as he will be able to go home the same day. Compression stockings should be worn and physical activity should be avoided for three weeks after surgery.

“Small capillaries may remain after surgery, but this can be resolved cosmetically. The highest priority is to solve health problems, and only then are there cosmetic improvements,” adds the surgeon.

Rapid medical progress

The field of vein surgery has seen perhaps the greatest progress in the last 30 years. Newly emerging laser technologies allow the treatment of these diseases with minimal invasion. In the past, vein operations were performed through open surgery and the patient was treated for about a month.

“Big cuts were made in the legs and healing took much longer. The breakthrough happened when laser technology appeared, thanks to which operations can be performed with minimal methods. After the operation, the patient can return to the normal rhythm of life on the same day”, says N. Markevičius.

Technology has accelerated not only the treatment, but also the diagnosis of the disease. Sensitive ultrasound machines can assess a patient’s blood flow in just 10-15 minutes. After the investigation, 99.9 percent it is possible to know with accuracy whether treatment will be needed or not, because sometimes only preventive methods such as compression therapy are enough.

“However, the most important thing is to watch your body and react to its changes. After recognizing the symptoms of venous diseases, immediately go to a medical institution and be examined. The doctor will prescribe the most appropriate and best-resulting treatment,” urges the surgeon.
