“The suspect confessed to seducing, killing and dumping the bodies of 42 women in a landfill,” Mohamed Amin, head of the Criminal Investigation Board, told reporters.
Earlier Monday, Kenyan police said they had arrested a suspected “serial killer” after nine mutilated bodies were found in a Nairobi garbage dump. “We arrested the main suspect this morning,” Amin told reporters. “We’re dealing with a serial killer, a psychopathic serial killer who has no respect for human life. We have a second suspect who was caught with the phone of one of the victims,” the official said.
According to police, the 33-year-old main suspect was arrested around 3am outside the bar in a joint operation by the Criminal Investigation Board and the National Police Service. A total of nine bodies have been found so far, and autopsies will be conducted on Monday.
Mutilated and dismembered bodies stuffed into plastic bags have been pulled from a pile of rubbish in the Mukuru slum area in the south of the capital since Friday, causing horror across the country. Police said on Sunday that all eight bodies found were of women.
Tension was high at the crime scene over the weekend, with police firing tear gas to disperse enraged residents. The findings have drawn attention from Kenyan police and increased pressure on President William Ruto, who is struggling to contain the crisis that has erupted across the country since anti-government protests that have killed dozens of demonstrators.
