Horror in broad daylight in a school. A man entered the Gambetta high school in Arras (Pas-de-Calais) this Friday morning armed with a knife with which he sowed death. A teacher, stabbed, was killed, two other people injured, including a technical employee of the canteen seriously. Here’s what we know.
What happened
According to our information, the man entered the establishment shouting “Allahu akbar”. He would have attacked several people. According to initial information, the author of the attack is Mohammed Mogouchkov, a 20-year-old former student of the establishment, of Chechen origin and listed for radicalization. He was arrested, along with his brother, aged 17.
Arras: knife attack in a high school, a teacher killed and two others seriously injured
Antoine, an intern at the establishment, recounts how he saw, from the fifth floor of the establishment, the students fleeing the canteen around 11 a.m., probably at the time when the technical agent was attacked. “We see two people, someone armed, with a knife. We saw the attacking person with the knife (…) Then, a person with a chair (…) Someone came to his rescue. It was he who threw the chair, who took the blows. He was the one who was bleeding. He was on the ground. When he fell again, there was a trace of blood. »
The students were able to leave the establishment at the beginning of the afternoon; some, who witnessed the scene, were interviewed by investigators.
A philosophy teacher who witnessed the attack, Martin Doussau, describes a panic at the time of the break, when the college students found themselves facing an armed man. “He attacked canteen staff, I wanted to go down to intervene, he turned to me, chased me and asked me if I was a history-geography teacher (…) We ‘is barricaded, then the police arrived and immobilized him.’
A teacher killed, two other adults injured
A teacher, aged 57, was fatally injured with a knife in front of the Gambetta high school. “He was a high-quality teacher who knew his job well. He was very professional,” describes a friend of the victim contacted by Le Parisien. “As a man and friend, he was so kind. Personally, he helped me get into the profession,” adds the woman who was also his colleague for more than ten years.
A technical agent was seriously injured and is in absolute emergency. Another person, also a teacher, was slightly injured in the face. His days are not in danger.
Who are the suspects
The individual is a former student of the attacked establishment. He is 20 years old. Of Chechen origin, Mohammed Mogouchkov is known to the courts for his radicalization, he is on file S. He is said to have shouted “Allahu Akbar” when entering the establishment.
Born in 2003 in Russia, he arrived in France in 2008. He was closely followed by the DGSI, according to information from domestic intelligence. He was the subject of a check on Thursday, but there was nothing to justify an arrest. “He was under surveillance and was subject to physical surveillance. In particular, he was checked yesterday without any offense being blamed on him,” indicates internal intelligence.
Videos filmed by students from the windows of the classes where they were confined show a man, tall, brown hair, collected in a bun, attacking several people in the school’s playground. One of the victims tries to put distance between himself and the attacker by using a chair. But he falls to the ground where the suspect hits him.
The brother of the alleged perpetrator of the stabbing, Souleyman Mogouchkov, a 17-year-old teenager, was also arrested near another school, without being in possession of a weapon.
The big brother of Souleyman and Mohammed is also involved in a terrorist affair: Movsar Mogouchkov was sentenced in April 2023 to five years in prison for “criminal terrorist association” in the case of a planned attack against the Elysium.
An open terrorist investigation
The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) took up the case and opened an investigation for “assassination in relation to a terrorist enterprise”, “attempted assassination in relation to a terrorist enterprise” and “terrorist criminal association in with a view to preparing crimes against persons.” The investigations were entrusted to the anti-terrorist sub-directorate of the national directorate of the judicial police (Sdat), the national directorate of the judicial police (DNPJ) and the General Directorate of Internal Security (DGSI).
The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, called this Friday morning to “very strongly increase the level of vigilance in all educational establishments”.
