More than a third of men in Germany find violence against women “acceptable”, according to the results of a study deemed “shocking” on Sunday by human rights defenders.

In a survey to be published by the Funke media group on Monday, 33% of men aged 18 to 35 said they accept the idea that “their hand slips” occasionally during an argument with their female partner. And 34% admitted to having been violent towards women in the past.

“This needs to change urgently”

These results are “shocking,” reacted Karsten Kassner of the Federal Forum Men, a group that campaigns for gender equality. “It is problematic that a third of the men questioned trivialize physical violence against women. This needs to change urgently,” he told the Funke Group.

Commissioned by children’s aid organization Plan International Germany and conducted online from March 9-21, the nationwide survey was conducted among 1,000 men and 1,000 women aged 18-35.

More than 115,000 women have been victims of domestic violence in 2021, according to data from the German Federal Police. A total of 301 women were killed by their current or former partner in 2021.

Violence to be punished “with the necessary severity”

Last year, the Minister of JusticeMarco Buschmann, had said he would push for legal changes to punish violence against women more harshly, saying such acts should not be downplayed as “private tragedies”.

“Gender-based violence must be named as such and punished with the necessary severity,” he said at the time.
