A two-year-old toddler survived a hippo attack near his home in southwestern Uganda. Iga Paul was playing near the shores of Lake Edward when the hippo lunged at him. The animal grabbed the toddler and swallowed half of his body, police said. A passerby fought the hippo by throwing rocks.
According to the police, after the attack that occurred on December 4, the toddler was taken to a nearby medical center where his injuries were treated. He was later taken to the hospital where the doctors gave him a rabies vaccine.
In the lake area in western Uganda there are several large national parks and game and nature reserves, along with a series of lakes, the man who rescued the toddler was identified as Crispus Bagonza, he “beat the hippo with stones and scared it, which made it release the victim from its mouth”, the Ugandan police announced .
The police said that the incident is the first time that a hippo came out of the lake and attacked someone. The police warned the locals that the animals can “see humans as a threat” and said that “any interaction can cause them to act strangely or aggressively.”
