A military camp to house a multinational NATO battle group to be built in Bulgaria will accommodate more than 2,000 troops.
As Day.Az reports with reference to TASS, this was reported on the official website of the Yambol city administration following a meeting between Mayor Valentin Revanski and the Chief of Defense Staff of the Bulgarian Army Emil Eftimov.
“The Ministry of Defense envisages the expansion of the barracks area in Kabila to the brigade level, more than 2,000 troops, but it will be completely under Bulgarian control, and not as a Bulgarian-American joint base at the Novo Selo training ground. This area was chosen because of its proximity to the airport and seaport, the Novo-Selo training ground, as well as thanks to the developed railway and road infrastructure,” said Eftimov.
It is expected that in the Kabile region buildings will be renovated to house military personnel, new electrical substations, sewerage and other infrastructure facilities will be built. Funds for this will be allocated from the state budget of Bulgaria and the NATO budget. It also provides for the construction of a temporary camp at the request of the Italian leadership of the NATO multinational battle group in Bulgaria.
Revanski emphasized that when implementing such a project, it is necessary to “ensure the peace of citizens” and announced his intention to hold a referendum on the location of a NATO base in his region. As a result, the Ministry of Defense and the local administration agreed that the Ministry of Defense would conduct an information campaign about the need to locate a military base so that citizens of the region could make an informed decision on this issue.
