An unfortunate train accident took place this Thursday at kilometer 151 of the Central Line and involved additional freight train 69, with locomotive 31205, resulting in the closure of rail traffic on this important line on the island.
The Minister of Transport, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, added on his Facebook profile that the incident occurred between Quintana and Jovellanos stations when three container plates operated by the Ferromar company derailed.
Although no loss or human damage was reported, 100 meters of railway track was disrupted and, as a result, train No. 14 from Guantánamo who was traveling to Havana at Santa Clara station.
Regarding the train involved in the accident, the Directorate General of Railways specified that only plates seven, eight and nine of the formation were cancelled, without damaging the rest of the train, including the locomotive.
After the accident, the authorities of the Railway, the Government and the Party of the municipality of Villa Clara, and the PNR, went to the place to attend to the passengers and the staff of the train from Guantánamo.
In this, Rodríguez Dávila reported, 895 passengers are transported, 84 children and 124 of them including older adults, pregnant women, diabetics and other conditions, “for which a medical post was established with a doctor and a nurse, and coordinated with the territory’s SIUM to secure an ambulance in the event of a medical emergency.”
Likewise, all passenger cars and the van were equipped with water, snacks, jams and soft drinks were sold at the Station, and lunch was sold.
“With the support of the Government, a free bottle of water was given to all passengers and crew members, free yogurt and a meal was offered to children and vulnerable people, and it was also prepared for the rest of the passengers and crew members.” insisted the minister of the sector.
To restore service, a relief train brigade and track brigades from Los Arabos, Colón and Matanzas worked to open rail traffic. Although, according to the manager, “other recovery tasks will continue,” the passenger train began its journey from the Santa Clara station.
