  • Former President Trump’s lawyer turned over a laptop belonging to a former adviser, media reported.

  • The lawyer reportedly told federal agents that the computer contained a folder with classification marks.

  • Sources told CNN the assistant didn’t realize the documents were classified.

Lawyers for former President Donald Trump discovered more classified materials in January and turned them over to federal investigators, according to multiple reports.

Among the materials handed over were papers with classified markings, an empty folder with classified markings and the laptop of one of Trump’s aides, multiple news outlets reported.

The classified documents were discovered in Mar-a-Lago, but not in the area where Trump stored the batch of materials seized during the August search of his home by FBI agents, ABC News reported.

Sources told ABC News that James Trusty, Trump’s attorney, told federal investigators that the classified materials had been electronically copied onto the aide’s laptop. The aide was apparently unaware that classified materials had been scanned on his laptop, sources told CNN.

ABC News first broke the news of the additional documents being released on Friday.

Trump is under investigation by Jack Smith, the Justice Department’s special counsel, after hundreds of documents were discovered in Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home after he left office in 2021. Smith reportedly cited former Vice President Mike Pence, though sources told The New York Times. it was because of his investigation into Trump’s role during the January 6, 2021 insurrection.

Classified documents have also been found at the homes of Pence and President Joe Biden, and the Justice Department is looking into their cases.

An attorney for Trump did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
