The patient underwent tumor resection and intrathoracic hyperthermic chemotherapy (HITTHOC) during surgery.

The operation took place with the cooperation of PSKUS Pulmonary Diseases and Thoracic Surgery Center, Oncology Clinic and Laboratory of Artificial Blood Circulation. After the diagnosis established in another medical institution and the treatment started with standard chemotherapy in Germany, looking for further treatment options in Latvia, the patient turned to the chief physician of the PSKUS Center for Lung Diseases and Thoracic Surgery, thoracic surgeon Artjom Špak.

Špak, together with thoracic surgeons Krista Grigorović and Gustava Pētersons, performed the operation of pleural decortication and partial lung resection. On the other hand, in the second stage of the operation, several drains are inserted into the patient’s pleural cavity, which are connected to the circulation system. The circulation apparatus provided a chemotherapy solution heated to a temperature of +41 degrees.

A long but successful recovery period followed. Currently, the operated patient has already started a radiation therapy course.

Considering that modern mesothelioma treatment requires a multidisciplinary approach and a combination of several methods, a personalized treatment plan is developed for the patient.

Špak points out that the operation would not have been possible without teamwork, and it is an important step forward in the treatment of complex and rare oncological diseases in Latvia.
