A video surveillance camera captured the disaster off the coast of Italy: a superyacht sank at a surprising speed

The video was captured by a camera close to where the luxury liner sank off the coast of Sicily early Monday morning.

Witnesses said they saw the ship sink in 60 seconds. Italian news agency ANSA quoted them as saying: “You can clearly see what is happening. Nothing could be done to the ship. He disappeared in a very short time.”

The Italian Coast Guard has announced that the body of Canadian-Antigua chef Recaldo Thomas has been found.

Six people are still missing, including the yacht’s owner, British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, is among the 15 people who were rescued.

Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvill and both men’s wives, Judy Bloomer and Neda Morvill, are also being sought.

A massive multi-party search operation is underway, including the coastguard and fire service, as well as divers and helicopters.

in 2013 Nick Sloane, the engineer who led the salvage operation of the doomed Costa Concordia cruise ship, said rescue divers began a “critical” 24-hour search today for survivors – some of whom may be trapped in air pockets inside the ship. However, he added that if this is the case, time to save them is running out.

Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a senior lecturer in mechanical engineering at Aston University, said the speed of the ship’s sinking (reportedly within minutes) and the fact that it remained intact “could have encouraged the formation of small air pockets inside”.
