How did a village in Scotland get the name Patna?

To understand this story in more detail, we can take the help of a report of ‘The Better India’. The history of this village is told in John More’s book ‘Gently Flows the Doon’ published in 1972. According to this, this village was settled by a Scottish man named William Fullarton. William’s father John Fullarton was a Major General in the British Army and was posted in Bihar between 1744 and 1766. Interestingly, William was born in Patna in 1774 and spent the early years of his life there.

In 1802, William returned to Scotland and took over his family’s coal mining business in the East Ayrshire area. He founded a village for the miners and named it Patna after his birthplace. Today, about 3000 people live in this village. In school, children are taught about the name of their village and also about the city of Patna in India.
