Emeline de Sloovere, 33, owner of an 8-hectare estate on the heights of the southern slopes of Epernay, throws a stone into the pond. A few months ago, she decided to abandon the metal caps that usually adorn her bottles in favor of a strip of paper.

Simple in appearance, this collar stamp is a “first” in Champagne – this method has not been authorized up to now – and has many advantages according to Émeline de Sloovere: “A metal cap is made of stratified materials comprising for example a plastic film between two layers of aluminum. It weighs about 3 grams for a 90 cap, while the band is made of paper and weighs less than one gram. Manufacturing and recycling are facilitated by the use of paper. »

Undeniable ecological arguments but which can raise questions for the most skeptical about the quality and preservation of champagne bottles whose metal cap offers total hermeticism. “There is no quality change. It is the muselet that allows you to close a bottle of champagne. This band in no way devalues the effectiveness of the muzzle, in the same way that the caps do not improve its effectiveness. “, she says.

Lots of logistics

But then why didn’t you think of it before? The paradigm shift, the awareness of a bygone aestheticism but also is above all the affixing of the tax capsule (CRD) which has become optional since June 1, 2019 which allowed Émeline to imagine this strip of paper.

“I’m happy to have the chance to use this band instead of the cap, it’s a personal satisfaction to be able to offer customers a differentiating packaging and in accordance with our eco-responsible approach”, she explains. .

Although this approach remains above all personal and requires tedious work for the winegrower who has to dress around 10,000 bottles that she markets under her own brand: “I admit that for the moment it’s a lot of logistics because all the strips are applied by hand. So it requires us almost triple the exposure time compared to a machine-applied cap. But I think it’s worth it. “, it also looks like a call from the foot to the entire Champagne sector: “If our approach can encourage other houses to evolve towards bands instead of headdresses, that would indeed be a source of pride for us. That of having paved the way for a new era of packaging in Champagne. »
