Drama in Lacanau (Gironde). This Sunday evening, a 51-year-old woman drowned on the central beach of the city shortly before 9 p.m., outside the hours of surveillance, according to information from France Blue.
The first elements of the investigation suggest that the fifty-year-old had gone to rescue two of her children swept away by a bath while swimming in the ocean.
In turn carried away by the swim, the woman was taken out of the water in cardiorespiratory arrest by the surfers and could not be resuscitated by the rescuers, despite the presence of a doctor and the civil security helicopter. .
The prefecture had warned of the risks
For their part, the children were able to be taken out of the water safe and sound. In a state of shock, the latter and their father were cared for by the rescue.
The prefect of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region had warned of the risks incurred by swimmers for the weekend of August 12 and 13. Along with Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Landes and Charente-Maritime, Gironde was one of the four departments classified as at maximum risk for baïne currents.
Every year, swimmers are carried away by the currents of baïne and drown. These natural pools, which appear calm and safe on the surface, create a strong current at depth and quickly carry swimmers out to sea.
