A World War I bomb was discovered today in downtown Belgrade near the Serbian parliament, Serbian media reported.

Initial information, according to Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, who visited the site, is believed to be an artillery shell from the First World War weighing around 200 kilograms and with a caliber of 300 millimeters.

The explosive device was found accidentally during the construction of a garage on a central street in the immediate vicinity of the parliament, according to posts on social networks, cited by the Serbian publication “Danas”. The bomb was found about seven to eight meters below the surface of the earth, writes BTA.

Members of the police and emergency department are securing the area and will determine the safest way to remove her, Dacic said. He added that there is currently no danger to people or objects in the area.

“So far, there have been several such cases since the beginning of the year and there have been no problems,” the minister recalled, adding that unfortunately Belgrade is a victim of bombing in almost every conflict, which is why there are many unexploded explosive devices left in the city.

Part of the street where the bomb was found is closed to traffic.
