South African writer Damon Galgut won the 2021 Booker Prize for The Promise. The name of the winner of the literary prize was announced on November 3.

The Promise is a novel about a crisis-ridden white farming family who lives near Pretoria. Its author was previously shortlisted for the Booker Prize.

The Booker Prize winner receives £ 50,000. Shortlisted writers receive checks for 2,500 pounds sterling, and they can also republish the novel-nominee in the “Booker” design.

In 2020, Scottish writer Douglas Stewart received the Booker Prize for his debut novel, Shuggie Bain. Prior to that, the Canadian writer Margaret Atwood and the British Bernardine Evaristo became the laureates of the award.

The Booker Prize is the most prestigious prize in English-language literature. It has been awarded since 2005. Until 2015, it was awarded once every two years, then annually.
