He is considered one of the most important American writers of the 20th century: James Baldwin (†63). He reached a large number of people with his works about social problems such as social justice, racism and sexuality.

James Baldwin’s beginnings

Born on August 2, 1924 in New York City, James took care of raising his siblings from a young age. In his teenage years, he followed his stepfather to church and began working as a priest.

He demonstrated his writing talent during his high school years. He published literary poems and plays in the school’s own magazine. From this point on he aimed to write a novel.

But he found writing more difficult than he expected, so it took a full twelve years to complete the book. The result was “Tell It on the Mountain”. His work went down in literary history as one of the most famous English-language novels of the 20th century.

Commitment to social problems

In 1924, Baldwin moved to Paris so that he could write more freely about his personal experiences. With his essays such as “Notes of a Native Son” or “Nobody Knows My Name” he not only reached dark-skinned groups of people. Because his depictions of black masculinity in America were revolutionary.

Baldwin published his second novel, “Giovanni’s Room,” in 1956. In it he dealt in depth with the topic of homosexuality. And that was long before the heyday of the lesbian and gay movement.

Baldwin’s other essays in the 1970s dealt with racial divisions in America. The film version of the tragedy “If Beale Street Could Talk” was nominated for an Oscar in 2018.

In 1986, James was awarded the Commander de la Légion d’honneur, one of France’s highest orders of merit, for his works.

But what is impressive is Baldwin’s influence in society. With his writing talent, he spoke to many people’s souls and sent a strong message for a more progressive society.
