According to police, on Tuesday around 9 p.m. the victim of the evening, a 27-year-old man, was standing on platform 9 of the station when an armed man approached him from behind and fired several shots from a pistol.
The victim died at the scene. The suspected shooter tried to run away, but police soon caught him on a nearby platform.
A handgun, believed to be a firearm, was found during a search at the station, which closed to all train traffic for about 25 minutes on Tuesday night due to a police operation.
Frankfurt prosecutors said on Wednesday that both the suspect and the victim are Turkish citizens. A possible motive for the shooting remains unclear, and authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
Travelers flooded the station again on Wednesday, with few signs of the deadly shooting just hours earlier.
“It’s really scary that something like this happens in the middle of a train station,” a student from Frankfurt who was traveling to Munich told dpa, noting that the area around Frankfurt’s central station has long been known for unrest.
“The situation at the station has become even worse,” a man who said he has been working at a bakery near platform 9 for more than 20 years told dpa.
