A young Cuban, an eleventh grade student at the Ernesto Guevara Pre-University Institute of Exact Sciences, in Villa Clara, won the bronze medal at the 36th International Informatics Olympiad (IOI 2024).

The event, which will take place in the city of Alexandria, Egypt, will end next Sunday, but the Cuban has already achieved the result of his talent and efforts: a bronze medal in the difficult competition.

His name is Marco Antonio Escandón García and he is in the eleventh grade at the Villa Clara vocational school, state newspaper Vanguardia confirmed.

Marco Antonio had to pass various tests during two days of competition, which brought together the world’s best high school and pre-university students in programming.

The competition includes various assessments that test students’ skills and preparation in computer programming, data processing and coding.

This is the second time the young man represents Cuba in this event. Their first performance was last year at the Yogyakarta event in Indonesia.

In addition to the young winner, there are three other students on the Cuban delegation at the Egyptian event: Maité Morales and Camilo Triana from Villa Clara, and Francis José Rodríguez, from Las Tunas.

Cuban students have had a winning streak so far this year in the regional and global knowledge Olympics. In June, for example, eight students from Cuba won prizes at the XV Ibero-American Informatics Olympiad.

In July, six Cuban students who participated in the 65th International Mathematical Olympiad, received five honorable mentions and just a few days later, two other young people won prizes in the Chemistry Olympiad.
