TRENTO. The summer exodus on the Brenner Autostrada has begun, with seven black-marked days in July, ten in August and three in September. The busiest days on the 314 kilometers of the road artery weekends remain, especially Saturdays and Sundays, but heavy and sustained traffic is expected even during rush hour on weekdays.
On the most critical days, traffic is estimated to be double the average and travel time is about three times longer than on a normal day. “In recent years, we have recorded eight times the traffic of 1974, with a record year in 2023 in which we recorded 73.9 million actual vehicles, with 202 thousand average vehicles per day and 45,440 average vehicles simultaneously present on the road artery. For this reason, we have prepared a plan to deal with the situation with preventive information on travellers, planning of activities and strengthening of staff”, explained the general manager, Charles Coast.
According to CEO Diego Cattoni, traffic increased in the first months of 2024 by about 2% compared to the previous year. “We see higher mobility than in the past, especially among Italians on light traffic, while heavy traffic is driven by Italian economic growth,” he said.
As regards the interventions planned for the summer exodus, the presence of 18 traffic police patrols during the day and 12 during the night (with interventions on each section within a period of just seven minutes), in addition to the hiring of seasonal toll collectors and the presence of 109 workers for urgent interventions. The possibility of entering and exiting at the Brenner barrier has also been increased, while roadworks (and the consequent reduction of carriageways) will be avoided in the time slots most affected by traffic.
