A24’s Crystal Lake Series Shifts Jason Voorhees’ Timeline to 1970s

Peacock premieres the eight-episode prequel series Crystal Lake on October 15, 2026, reviving the Friday the 13th franchise. Developed by A24 and showrunner Brad Caleb Kane, the series explores the psychological unraveling of Pamela Voorhees following the drowning of her son, Jason, in the early 1970s.

The revival marks the first official installment of the franchise since 2009, following a long period of dormancy due to legal complications. To bring the story back, A24 announced a prequel series developed under Bryan Fuller with an ambitious per-episode budget of around $10 million.

Brad Caleb Kane Reworks the Voorhees Timeline

Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane intentionally altered the established canon to make the grief of Pamela Voorhees feel more immediate. In the original 1980 film, Jason drowned as a boy in 1957, but the series moves this event to 1971, with the primary narrative unfolding in 1972.

Kane considered setting the show in the late ’50s or early ’60s, but ultimately other considerations won out. This timeline adjustment also aligns Jason’s birthday with the franchise’s date: Friday, May 13, 1960. As a result, Jason, aged 11, drowns in the summer of 1971—occurring on August 13, 1971, which was the year’s sole Friday the 13th.

To maintain authenticity, the production filmed in New Jersey between June and October 2025 and used the still-operating Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco, the same location used for the original movie, including its iconic swimming dock.

The series follows Pamela’s descent from a grieving mother to a killer. Cardellini’s performance is described as giving the best Friday the 13th-adjacent performance to date, capturing a nature that is equal parts terrifying, nurturing and needy.

Expanding the Crystal Lake Ensemble

The auditory experience is shaped by series composer Giosuè Greco and theme music composer Harry Manfredini, with production by A24 and network Peacock.

  • Levon Brooks: Played by William Catlett, the local police chief who steps in to help Pamela.
  • “Crazy” Ralph: Nick Cordileone plays a younger version of the franchise’s doom-prophet, with the show bridging his transition from a PTSD-suffering survivalist to a townie doomsayer.
  • Grace: Played by Gwendolyn Sundstrom, she is Jason’s only friend at camp before his death and a fellow outcast who is treated like a surrogate daughter by Pamela.
  • Jason Voorhees: 12-year-old actor Callum Vinson plays the young Jason, utilizing extensive prosthetics to depict the notable deformities to his head that led to him being bullied.

Series Humanizes Villains in Successful Reinvention

However, the series is credited with humanizing the villains. Kane offers profound empathy toward the Voorhees family, providing a deep look into two of the most iconic slasher villains in horror.

The season concludes with a high body count and a finale that changes the series' direction, making it a messy must-watch for longtime fans. Despite these narrative risks, the series is seen as a successful reinvention that balances a 1970s crime mystery with the legendary gore we all came to see.
