Multiple Collisions on A4 Motorway in Poland Result in Fatalities, Ongoing Investigation
A series of traffic incidents on December 2nd along the A4 motorway in Poland, including a nine-vehicle collision near Góra Święta Anna, resulted in multiple casualties and a continuing police investigation. The events underscore the dangers of winter driving conditions and the potential for cascading accidents on major roadways.
Initial Nine-Vehicle Pileup and Subsequent Fatalities
The initial incident, a large-scale car accident involving cars, trucks, and a bus, occurred between the Kędzierzyn-Koźle junction and Krapkowice. Nineteen individuals were traveling in the vehicles involved. While initial reports indicated one fatality directly from the nine-vehicle collision, authorities have clarified the circumstances surrounding the death of a 43-year-old woman.
According to a spokesperson for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Opole, the woman survived the initial impact. “According to the prosecutor’s findings, the 43-year-old woman who participated in the collision survived the very moment the cars collided,” the spokesperson stated in an interview with “Nowa Trybuna Opolska.” Shortly after the accident, she exited her vehicle and began walking toward the median of the highway when she was struck by another vehicle whose driver did not anticipate a pedestrian in that location.
Investigation Ongoing, No Charges Filed
Polish authorities are currently investigating the series of events. As of today, December 3rd, no charges have been filed in connection with the incidents, but the investigation remains active. Experts suggest that poor visibility and challenging road conditions were key contributing factors to the initial pileup.
Chain of Accidents on the A4
The December 2nd incidents were not isolated. Reports indicate up to four separate accidents occurred on the A4 motorway on the same day. In a separate incident, two passenger cars and a minibus collided in the opposite lane. Emergency Medical Team personnel evaluated three individuals at the scene, and two passengers were transported to a hospital after a subsequent collision involving a passenger car, a truck, and highway barriers.
Further down the A4, near Sieroniowice – between Strzelce Opolskie and Kędzierzyn-Koźle – a truck caught fire following a collision with another truck, resulting in one additional fatality.
