A delegation of my Bangladesh Party (AB Party) held a meeting with the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, Gwen Lewis. On Monday (July 15) at noon, a delegation of 6 members of the AB Party held this meeting at the Dhaka headquarters of the United Nations in Gulshan.

In the meeting, a bilateral exchange of views was held on the United Nations SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) or Sustainable Development Goals and Bangladesh perspective.

In the meeting that lasted for more than an hour, besides the UN resident coordinator, Gwen Lewis, the senior human rights adviser of the Dhaka office, Huma Khan was present.

AB Party’s delegation included the party’s joint convener Advocate Tajul Islam, member secretary Mojibur Rahman Manju, joint member secretary Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuad, barrister Jobair Ahmed Bhuiyan and AB Party’s assistant member secretary and women in-charge barrister Nasreen Sultana Milli.

The main topic of the bilateral discussion was Bangladesh’s progress in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the government’s demand for the upcoming advancement from the list of least developed countries.

AB Party thinks that Bangladesh is far behind in achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. One of the main reasons for this is the lack of good governance, corruption and the influence of massive partyization in state institutions. AB Party leaders appreciated the activities of UN agencies in Bangladesh in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and UN Development System Reform (UNDS).

Governments should work together in a new and coherent way to implement the SDGs and increase development impact, the leaders said.

During the discussion, AB Party leaders expressed concern over the country’s weak economy and how it could potentially put pressure on achieving SDG goals such as poverty alleviation, disaster management, good governance, police reform, human rights, environment, climate change, food security, women’s empowerment, education. Talk about solutions. Speaking about migration, refugees, peacekeeping, health care, research, inclusive infrastructure and resilience, they voiced their opinions on recently published data manipulation and numerical errors. Express themselves on how this can seriously damage welfare aspirations.

They said the AB Party felt the need for a stable and representative government to address not only the economic crisis but also the state of civil and political rights. Every international indicator indicates that we, as a country and a nation, are falling behind in ensuring the rule of law, gender balance and freedom of the press. They called on the United Nations to continue its support, engagement and cooperation so that national progress is not disrupted.

The AB Party delegation informed the Resident Representative about their party activities and programs across the country.
