Abad affair, purchasing power, pensions… what to remember from the first Council of Ministers of the Borne government

by time news

This Monday sounded like a baptism of fire for Olivia Grégoire, in her clothes as a spokesperson for the Borne government. The communications professional, who ran her own agency before becoming a Member of Parliament in 2017, introduced her press briefing with a brief personal commitment to her mission: “to flush out simplistic speeches and simply present the complex issues that we have to take up”.

A law in favor of purchasing power

As part of this first Council of Ministers, the members of the government addressed the priorities of the five-year term: education, health, ecology, but also “already an emergency, which you know, purchasing power. A first bill should thus be adopted before the legislative elections, and deployed afterwards.

This five-year term will aim “to help the French in their constrained expenses”, with new measures and others already in place that the government will continue. Olivia Grégoire listed a few of them: tariff shield on gas and electricity, deployment of the food check to influence food prices, or even a rebate planned on fuel. “The government will act on social benefits,” she added, without giving further details.

The Macron bonus will be tripled

“In addition, the government will increase the salaries of civil servants, and will continue to act indirectly on the remuneration of the self-employed, relieved by a further reduction in contributions. »

The spokeswoman also announced the tripling of the Macron bonus, which will be made permanent. This device, set up to respond to the demands of the Yellow Vests, allows companies to pay a bonus of up to 1,000 euros without charge and tax. It should increase to 3,000 euros in some companies.

Other government priorities

In addition to purchasing power, Emmanuel Macron has three priorities. Gender equality, intergenerational solidarity and the “republican pact” which, “in all lucidity, is weakened”, recognizes Olivia Grégoire, evoking “this feeling, diffuse, among some of our compatriots, that the Republic would be for the others “. She evokes pell-mell a strengthening of the security budget and work on “better effectiveness of sentences”.

Largely absent from the discussions this morning, the pension reform. “Unlike the future law for purchasing power, the” structural reform on which we are committed on pensions was not addressed this morning, “said Olivia Grégoire. “There will be consultations on pensions and education, but the timetable is not yet defined. »

“Justice will establish the truth” about the accusations against Damien Abad

After the Mediapart revelations, Elisabeth Borne had an interview with Damien Abad on Sunday evening, reveals Olivia Grégoire. “She told him that she would follow the court decisions that could be rendered”. The spokesperson recalled the “clear line” of the president and the government on this subject: “Zero tolerance for sex offenders. Respect, total listening for all the alleged victims. The issue of violence against women is a subject that the government has already raised and will continue to raise to the heart of its priorities. »

Then she got to the heart of the matter: “In this case, what is at stake is establishing the truth. And it is up to the courts to do so. It’s not mine, and it’s not yours. A case was brought to justice twice, and closed without action in 2017. If there were other victims, they would have to be able to come forward without reservation. I am not here to comment on hypotheses, the justice has not been seized of any other procedure. And “no member of the government was aware of these accusations,” she said in response to a question.

Elisabeth Borne will resign in the event of defeat in the legislative elections

No exception for the Prime Minister, who was never elected. Like all the other minister-candidates, if Élisabeth Borne, candidate in Calvados, were to lose the legislative election next June, she too will have to leave her post in government. Olivia Grégoire reaffirmed it, after a question on this subject: “To know her a little, the answer is yes and it looks like her. Elisabeth Borne is a woman fully committed to the country and committed to the project of the President of the Republic. I can’t imagine a woman who is so committed and who keeps her word, not keeping it on the matter. »
