The coalition is once again having difficulty raising the Citizenship Law, which is intended to prevent the unification of Palestinian families in Israel. Tomorrow, Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked will put her law to a vote, but he is receiving opposition within the government and within the coalition.

Meretz has already announced on Thursday that it will oppose the law in the Ministerial Committee for Legislation. And tonight on the “Meet the Press” program, the chairman of the PM, Mansour Abbas, announced that the PM would vote against the Citizenship Law.

It should be noted that Abbas, who is not a minister, has no ‘finger’ in the Ministerial Committee for Legislation, and Meretz, too, can vote against, but has no veto over decisions.

The original Citizenship Law froze the “family reunification” requests of Palestinians with Israeli citizens. It was extended every year, by a decision of the Knesset, but with the formation of the coalition, the Knesset failed to get a majority to extend it, because the opposition voted against it, and members of Meretz and Ra’am did not support it. In recent months, Shaked has tried to bring a new law to a vote, but has met with opposition in the coalition. The opposition did not promise a safety net, and so the law is stuck. On the other hand, MK Simcha Rotman of Religious Zionism raised his own private citizenship law, which had already been rejected once, and was re-introduced.

Due to the tension in the coalition, the ministerial committee has so far postponed the discussion of Shaked’s law, and rejected Rothman’s law. Tomorrow it will be brought up again for discussion in the Ministerial Committee for Legislation, and it remains to be seen whether agreements will be reached there.

On Wednesday, the Electricity Law was passed, at the request of the Prime Minister. Right-wing Knesset members voted in favor.
