A 21-year-old man suspected of orchestrating a deadly Berlin Pride attack was shot and killed by police during a raid on July 26, 2026, after allegedly charging at officers with a bladed weapon. The incident, described as an Islamist terror attack
by German officials, left one dead and 29 injured, with the suspect having a history of radicalization and criminal offenses.
The suspect, identified as Abdul Ballout, a German citizen of Lebanese descent, was found at an allotment garden in Spandau by Berlin police, who said he rushed toward officers with a stabbing weapon
before being fatally wounded. According to initial findings, Ballout had previously attempted to join the Islamic State group, was imprisoned in Lebanon for inciting religious conflict, and had a criminal record including assault and robbery convictions dating back to 2020. His arrest followed a van attack on Saturday night that killed one person and injured 29 others at Berlin’s Christopher Street Day (CSD) Pride parade.
Background of the Suspect
Ballout’s criminal history and alleged ties to Islamist circles were detailed in multiple sources. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt confirmed that Ballout had previously drawn attention to himself through a high volume of criminal offences, radicalisation and affiliation with the Islamist scene.
In May 2025, prosecutors stated he traveled to Lebanon with the intent of joining the Islamic State group, where he was later arrested and sentenced to three months in prison for inciting religious and sectarian conflict. He returned to Germany in November 2025, was arrested at Berlin Brandenburg Airport, and later received a one-year-and-10-month prison sentence for preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state,
which was suspended for six months.
The Berlin public prosecutor’s office revealed that Ballout had also been convicted of assault and robbery in 2022 and of stealing headphones in 2020. His alleged attempt to join IS was further corroborated by the Sun, which reported that he had made multiple attempts to leave Germany and join the Islamic State (IS) militant group,
including a failed journey to Mauritania before traveling to Lebanon.
Reactions and Implications
Interior Minister Iris Spranger praised the swift action of security forces, stating, I am grateful to the security authorities for finding the attacker so quickly.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz called the incident “a heinous act” and emphasized that it targeted “our society” by promoting kindness and tolerance.
Wes Streeting, the UK’s defence secretary, highlighted the necessity of Pride marches in the face of rising hate crimes. In many respects, things are different and better now than they've ever been […] But hate crimes are also on the rise. There are lots of people who don't accept diversity and difference in our society,
he said, adding that Pride events remain a protest against those who do not accept life in the 21st century.
Berlin’s Senate Department for Interior Affairs confirmed the suspect was linked to Islamist circles
and had been under surveillance. The attack occurred outside the secure festival area, with many victims injured while traveling to or from the event, according to Interior Minister Dobrindt.
The Berlin Fire Department reported that three of the injured had life-threatening injuries, while eight were seriously hurt. A makeshift memorial at the attack site featured a pride flag and flowers, underscoring the community’s resilience. Alfonso Pantisano, Berlin’s queer liaison officer, called the event a day of joy, visibility and freedom,
expressing solidarity with the victims.
The European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the attack, stating that the Pride event stands for freedom, dignity, and equality,
and urged society to live, love, and stand up for their rights without fear.
Wes Streeting emphasized that the home secretary will […] make the right determinations around what kind of policing presence we need,
while officials stressed the importance of getting the balance right in terms of policing.
The incident has also prompted discussions about the broader threat of Islamist extremism in Germany, with Dobrindt describing it as an Islamist terror attack
and linking it to Ballout’s known affiliations.
