The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and the Head of the Government of National Unity, Abdel Hamid Dabaiba, opened this morning in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, the work of the second regional review conference of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration in the Arab region.

In his speech, Aboul Gheit welcomed the head of the National Unity Government, stressing the importance of the immigration file and its discussion in the Arab League, given that a number of Arab countries are transit countries, stressing the need to unify efforts regarding this file.

In his speech, Dabaiba stressed Libya’s reservations about the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, which was approved by the United Nations General Assembly session in 2018, as it aims to legitimize illegal immigration, confuse concepts between refugees and migrants, and distinguish between countries of entry, transit and origin. The Prime Minister referred to the efforts made by the #Government_of_National_Unity to reduce illegal immigration and coordinate with regional countries and affected European countries to develop a strategy to regulate this issue.

Dabaiba noted that Libya will host the Trans-Mediterranean Migration Forum on July 17, which aims to discuss illegal migration and issue an initiative that the concerned countries will participate in formulating, based on the principle of respect and cooperation through national laws and policies, and establishing a strategic framework that enhances dialogue and cooperation between Africa and Europe.

The conference was attended by the Director-General of the International Organization for Migration, the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, and the Executive Secretariat of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, with the participation of relevant international and regional organizations and delegates of Arab countries to the League of Arab States.
