About 500,000 Afghans have fled their homes since the start of the Taliban offensive

The number of internally displaced persons in Afghanistan increased by about 500 thousand people after the Taliban (a terrorist group banned in the Russian Federation) seized power in the country. This was stated by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi at the donor conference on Afghanistan.

“3.5 million people remain internally displaced persons, of which about 500 thousand have become internally displaced recently,” said Mr. Grandi (quoted by TASS). He warned that a possible collapse of the Afghan economy, as well as increased tensions in the country, could soon lead to an increase in the number of refugees.

For his part, UN Secretary General António Guterres, following the results of the donor meeting on Afghanistan, said that the volume of promised assistance to this country amounted to $ 1.12 billion. The goal of the conference was to raise $ 606 million over the next four months.

Mr. Guterres said that the UN Central Emergency Response Fund will allocate $ 20 million to support humanitarian operations in Afghanistan.

On the eve of “Al-Jazeera” announced the arrival in Kabul of four planes of the UN World Food Program (WFP). These are the first aircraft of the organization to arrive in Kabul after the end of the US mission in Afghanistan and the transfer of the airport to the Taliban. Earlier, Zamir Kabulov, the special representative of the Russian president for Afghanistan, director of the second department of Asia of the Russian Foreign Ministry, also said that Russia could send humanitarian aid to Afghanistan in the near future.
