Berlin – It’s going well for Matti Schurr. Half a year ago, the 28-year-old had the cargo bike rental company Avocargo entered in the Berlin commercial register. At that time, the company started with ten cargo bikes. There are now six times as many. 25 cargo bikes were added this week. More are to follow. “We still have a lot to do,” says Schurr.
Avocargo is the first short-term rental company for cargo bikes. The business model is so far unique not only in Berlin, but nationwide. It makes sense. Because it is expensive to buy and there is a great need, especially in this city. When the Senate offered up to 2000 euros in funding for the purchase of a privately used cargo bike at the beginning of May and paid out a total of 600,000 euros for it, the pot was emptied within three hours. Another reason for the rental model: Not everyone knows what to do with the bulky vehicle.
