Washington: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hinted at a major move by presenting a plan for a regional military alliance against Iran in the Middle East. Addressing members of the US Senate and House of Commons on Wednesday, Netanyahu talked about the military alliance. Netanyahu, who was giving his record fourth address to the US Congress, said that all countries that are living in peace with Israel and who want to make peace with Israel should join the military alliance against Iran. He also suggested the name of this alliance and said, ‘I have a name for this alliance. I think we should call it the Abraham Alliance.’
NATO-like alliances in the Middle East
Netanyahu said, ‘We saw a glimpse of that coalition in April, when five forces flew to shoot down Iranian missile and drone attacks against the Jewish state.’ Netanyahu was referring to Iran’s attack on Israel in April. In this attack, the US, Britain as well as Jordan and Saudi Arabian air forces helped Israel to shoot down Iranian missiles and drones.
The Israeli Prime Minister said that this new alliance would be a natural extension of the historic Abraham Accords. Netanyahu indicated that this alliance would be the NATO of the Middle East. He said, ‘After the Second World War, America created a security alliance in Europe to counter the growing Soviet threat. Similarly, America and Israel can create a security alliance in the Middle East today to counter the growing Iranian threat.
Iran’s target told America
Netanyahu called Iran a threat not only to Israel but also to America. Quoting a Hezbollah leader, he said that after Israel, Iran’s target will be America, together we can protect democracy against tyranny. He said, Iran considers America its biggest enemy. It has been fighting Washington ever since it seized power in 1979. They sent death squads to kill a former foreign minister and a former national security adviser. We recently came to know that they had also openly threatened to kill former President Trump.
“When we fight Iran, we are fighting America’s most bitter enemy,” Netanyahu said. When Israel joins that fight and works to prevent a nuclear Iran, “we are not just protecting ourselves, we are protecting you as well. Our enemies are your enemies, our fight is your fight, our victory will be your victory.”
