It is very common to see in movies, series and romance novels people who regret having cheated on their partners. However, reality says something very different from what fiction usually shows. That’s because, according to a recent study, people who cheat don’t feel guilty for making the famous “skipping”.
A survey carried out by scientists at Johns Hopkins University analyzed a group of 2,000 users of Ashley Madison, a website dedicated to connecting people looking for extramarital relationships. The results will astonish you. Follow along.
People who cheat on their partners don’t feel guilty
In general, survey participants revealed love and satisfaction with their spouses and the relationship. However, they also expressed that they find satisfaction in engaging in extramarital relationships, showing little remorse.
“These findings paint a more complicated picture of infidelity compared to what we thought we knew.”, revealed Dylan Selterman, professor of psychology and brain sciences. He is also one of the authors of the research.
Understand how the search worked
The team of scientists conducted a study with approximately 2,000 users of the Ashley Madison website, collecting data through questionnaires about before and after their extramarital involvement. The participants basically had to answer about their current marriage situation, and the responses were very positive.
In the article, Selterman and her colleagues portray the typical profile of the site’s users as middle-aged men who love their wives, but face sexual dissatisfaction and therefore go after “newness”. Afterwards, there is no feeling of remorse whatsoever, and they even report feeling sexually satisfied after the act.
However, researchers stated that there is still much more to discover about what makes one person cheat on another. “Sometimes, people cheat even when relationships are very good”this Selterman.
