Massimo Giannini and other very authoritative commentators on the affairs of our home have commented on the funeral of Giulia Cecchettin, a 22-year-old snatched from life at the hands of her murderer, Filippo Turetta. In recent weeks the whole world of the “Palazzo” has worked to make the closeness of politics to the Cecchettin family felt and the declarations but also the concrete gestures to put a stop to violence against women have multiplied disproportionately. There was no division between the majority and the opposition. Beyond the debate on patriarchy, politics appeared united in condemning without any ifs or buts what happened, awakening an active perception on the part of society about such a serious problem.
Yet there are those who have found time to engage in easy demagoguery. In fact, the reality is very different from what has been reported. We remember that at Giulia’s funeral there were several representatives of the institutions. The Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio also representing the government were the president of the Veneto region Luca Zaia and around forty mayors from the Padua area, Veneto and also Friuli (Aviano). At this point the chatter stops. And for once it would have been more correct to underline the presence of politics at the funeral. And perhaps silence on a family’s pain would have been more dignified.
