The pro-Awami white panel has won all the posts in the Supreme Court Bar Association elections that ended amid back-and-forth processions, clashes, tension and uproar. In the preliminary results of the vote, the candidates of the government-backed Bangabandhu Awami Lawyers Coordination Parishad (white panel) have won all 14 posts, including the president and general secretary. The current president of the white panel is the senior advocate Md. Momtaz Uddin Fakir and current editor Advocate Abdun Noor Dulal were re-elected as editor.

Both Momtaz Uddin Fakir and Abdun Noor Dulal of the association confirmed their victory to Jago News on Thursday (March 16) night. They said, counting of votes is over. We have won on all counts.

However, till the writing of this report at night, the process of officially announcing the result was going on.

As per the pre-announced schedule, Wednesday was the first day of polling for the two-day (March 15 and 16) Supreme Court Bar Association elections. Chief Justice of Election Management Committee on Tuesday before the election. When Mansurul Haque Chowdhury resigned, tension spread between Awami and pro-BNP lawyers. On that day at 8 o’clock in the night, the BNP lawyers were accused of tearing the ballot paper kept in the box in the seminar room on the third floor of the Bar Association.

After that, a seven-member sub-committee was convened by Awami League-backed white panel lawyer Shah Khosruzzaman and a separate seven-member sub-committee was announced by lawyer AZM Fariduzzaman from the BNP-backed panel.

In the election of the Executive Committee of the Supreme Court Bar for the term of 2023-24, the current president Senior Advocate Md. Momtaz Uddin Fakir and current editor Advocate Abdun Noor Dulal contested for the post of editor.

The other candidates of the white panel are – Mohammad Ali Azam and Jasmine Sultana for vice-president, Masood Alam Chowdhury for treasurer, Noore Alam Ujjwal and Harunur Rashid for co-editor.

In addition, the seven candidates nominated for the position of executive member are — Md. Safayet Hossain Sajib, Mohiuddin Rudru, Shafiq Raihan Shaon, Subhash Chandra Das, Nazmul Hossain Swapan, Md. Delwar Hossain, Moniruzzaman Rana.

On the other hand, senior lawyer Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon is the president of the blue panel supported by BNP and Barrister Md. Ruhul Quddus Kajal competes.

The other candidates of the blue panel are – Advocate Humayun Kabir Manju for the post of vice president, Sarkar Tahmina Sandhya, Barrister Mahfuzur Rahman Milan for the post of co-editor, Advocate Md. Abdul Karim and Rezaul Karim as treasurer.

Advocate Ashikuzzaman Nazrul, Fatima Akhter, Fazle Elahi Avi, Barrister Faisal Dastgir, Advocate Shafiqul Islam, Mostafizur Rahman Ahad and Russell Ahmed contested for the post of executive members of this panel.

On February 23, the schedule for the election of the executive committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association for the session 2023-2024 was announced.

Elections were held for a total of 14 posts including one for the post of President of the Executive Committee, two for the post of Vice-President, one for the post of Secretary, one for the post of Treasurer, two for the post of Deputy Editor and seven posts for the post of Member of the Executive Committee. There were 29 candidates against 14 posts in this election. Total voters were eight thousand 602 people.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday (March 15), the first day of voting started at 10 am, but the polling was stopped shortly after due to the obstruction of the pro-BNP blue panel candidates and supporters. Meanwhile, BNP supporters clashed with Awami pro white panel candidates and supporters. The Supreme Court premises became heated.

Meanwhile, journalists were victims of reckless police attacks while performing their professional duties. Several journalists and lawyers were injured. Later many of them were treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Leaders of Law Reporters Forum (LRF) met Chief Justice Hasan Faiz Siddiqui on the same day, strongly condemning the police attack on journalists and seeking redressal.
