This exhibition opens the program of the Caspian Biennale Platform, which is organized by the Union of Artists of Azerbaijan, the International Club of Artists and the United Club of Artists of Azerbaijan and will become an important cultural event for the entire region. The Caspian Platform will take place from September 28 to October 1 and will bring together artists, curators and experts from the Caspian countries with the aim of promoting cultural exchange, dialogue and cooperation through art. The Platform will host exhibitions, round tables and discussions aimed at exploring contemporary art in the region and its interaction with global artistic processes.
Contemporary art of Azerbaijan of the XX-XXI centuries is represented by several major directions. First of all, this is socialist realism, which is reflected in the works of Tair Salakhov, Mikail Abdullaev and many other masters. Another important direction is the Absheron school, represented in the works of such artists as Tofig Javadov, Rasim Babayev and their like-minded people. The third direction is underground (unofficial art), reflected in the works of Gorkhmaz Efendiyev, Ashraf Murad, Javad Mirjavadov and other nonconformists. These directions have been studied and described by art historians and experts.
However, a significant layer of culture and an important direction of contemporary art in Azerbaijan remains insufficiently explored – this is modern abstract art. Despite the fact that the artist Farhad Khalilov has been working fruitfully in this direction for many years, as clearly evidenced by his last year’s exhibition in the YARAT halls, abstraction in Azerbaijan remains relatively unexplored. In this regard, the Union of Artists of Azerbaijan decided to start a series of exhibitions of domestic abstract art (using the example of the presented exhibition), as well as to initiate research by art historians in this direction.
Modern abstraction in Azerbaijan is an avant-garde phenomenon, but has deep roots in our traditional culture – especially in the art of the ancient carpet with its abstract geometric elements and patterns. The structure of carpets, rugs and kilims is based on abstract geometry, which indicates that the Azerbaijani people in their cultural matrix have long carried abstract thinking and experience in creating abstract visual forms.
It is noteworthy that in addition to artists whose work is entirely devoted to abstraction, such as Mir-Nadir Zeynalov and Huseyn Hagverdi, there are also authors who work in other styles, but have carried out individual experiments in abstract art. The exhibition presents works by such masters as Kamal Ahmed, Gennady Brizhatyuk and Ujal Hagverdiev, who introduced elements of abstraction into their creative searches.
Also at the exhibition you can see a synthesis of carpet forms and traditional miniatures in a modern design, created by Elchin Aslanov and Ramiz Aslanov.
This exhibition will be an important impetus for the further development of both artistic practice and art historical theory in the field of abstract art, expanding its range. Viewers can expect new discoveries and further exhibitions of Azerbaijani abstract art.
Exhibition opening hours: September 27-30 from 10.00 to 18.00 (free admission)
Address: Baku, Neftchilyar Ave., 49, Museum Center (4th floor)
