Abu Dhabi Launches Ambitious Healthy Living Strategy to Combat Chronic Disease

A comprehensive, multi-sector plan aims to foster healthier lifestyles and improve wellbeing for all residents of the emirate.

Abu Dhabi has unveiled a groundbreaking Healthy Living Strategy, a far-reaching initiative designed to proactively address public health challenges and enhance the quality of life for citizens and residents. The strategy, developed under the direction of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, signals a significant shift towards preventative healthcare and a commitment to building a more resilient and thriving community.

A Proactive Approach to Wellbeing

The core principle underpinning the Abu Dhabi Healthy Living Strategy is a focus on prevention. Recognizing the growing burden of non-communicable diseases – including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer – the plan seeks to mitigate risk factors and empower individuals to make informed choices about their health. This represents a multi-year commitment, uniting government entities, the private sector, communities, and individuals in a shared vision for a healthier future.

Three Pillars of a Healthier Abu Dhabi

In its initial phase, the strategy will concentrate on three key pillars:

  • Increasing physical activity: Promoting active lifestyles through infrastructure development and community programs.
  • Improving diet and nutrition: Encouraging healthier eating habits through education and access to nutritious food options.
  • Strengthening awareness and knowledge: Empowering residents with the information they need to make informed health decisions.

Beyond these core areas, the strategy also emphasizes the critical role of sleep and mental wellbeing as fundamental drivers of overall health. These priorities will be advanced through a combination of enhanced infrastructure, supportive policies, and targeted programs designed to make healthy choices the easiest choices.

Collaboration and Data-Driven Insights

“Health begins long before we step into a doctor’s clinic, it is shaped by what we eat, how we move, and the environment we live in,” stated a senior official. “Moving more and eating well must become priorities that define how we live, learn, and work. By harnessing cross-sector collaboration and intelligence-led insights, we can protect individuals, strengthen families, and build more resilient communities.”

The strategy centers on driving behaviour change, acknowledging that individual responsibility is paramount. However, it also aims to create an environment where healthy choices are not only accessible but also sustainable, seamlessly integrating prevention into daily life. Leveraging digital intelligence, the initiative will proactively identify high-risk groups, enabling targeted interventions and maximizing impact.

Making Healthy Living Accessible to All

According to a leading health executive involved in the strategy’s implementation, “Our mission is clear: to make healthy living the easy choice for every citizen and resident in Abu Dhabi.” The strategy acknowledges that a one-size-fits-all approach is ineffective, and is therefore grounded in behavioural science to address specific needs across the emirate.

“Across the emirate, strong initiatives are already driving healthier lives,” the executive continued. “The strategy aims to bring these efforts together, accelerate their impact, and ensure our collective resources across the government and the private sector are focused on where they can make the biggest difference, from active infrastructure to nutritious food, and stronger health awareness.”

More than 20 initiatives have already been approved for implementation by a diverse range of government entities and private sector partners over the coming year, signaling a swift and comprehensive rollout of the Abu Dhabi Healthy Living Strategy.
