Authorities say the main causes of accidents include drunk driving and failure to comply with speed limits.
In the run-up to the National Holidays, the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, held a worrying number of traffic accidents that have occurred over the last 48 hours.
Within the framework of the 18 Seguro plan, the Secretary of State indicated that there have been reports 14 people dead and 114 arrested.
“In these 48 hours a worrying number of traffic accidents have been recorded, with fatal consequences,” Tohá warned.
“If this pace continues in the following days We are going to end up with figures that we do not want for Chileans“, the authority added.
Because of this, the minister called for “take care of ourselves in the days to come, to follow the instructions, to inform ourselves, to plan well the activities that we are going to do.”
For his part, the Undersecretary of Transport, Jorge Daza, said that the death toll is “very regrettable, very worrying, because We have been here for two days and the September 18th festivities have just begun.”
Main causes of accidents before the National Holidays
Authorities indicated that the main causes of traffic accidents are:
- Drunk driving
- Not respecting speed limits
- Distracted driving and distracted walking.
Meanwhile, the general of Carabineros, Juan Muñoz, reported that until this Sunday, September 15, there are 114 arrested, 68 for drunk driving, 28 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 18 for driving after consuming drugs.
