Lüneburg – It won’t be the last swimming accident this year. But each one is a drama in itself and brings incredible suffering to the families affected. As in the case of little Agid (8) from Lower Saxony.

On Monday, the boy and his family went on a trip to the Scharnebecker Inselsee. The family, who came from Syria in 2015, wanted to enjoy the wonderful summer weather there and spend the afternoon.

At first the day is routine and relaxed, the towels are unpacked. Agid’s dad is setting up the grill, children are playing everywhere.

But then the tragedy takes its course: Agid is suddenly gone! “At first he was still playing on the bank, but suddenly he was no longer to be seen. We called the police immediately, ”said Agid’s mother to BILD the day after.

At the same time, dozens of visitors to the Inselsee are desperately looking for Agid. Ambulances, fire brigade, the DLRG with divers and the police quickly move out to the Inselsee. But they are too late.

“A good half an hour after receiving the report, the lifeless boy was discovered underwater in the island lake. The child was taken to an ambulance and resuscitation began immediately. About half an hour later, the child was driven to the clinic, ”said the police. Agid died there.

An indescribable shock for the boy’s family. Life in the new home – it will never be the same again, says Agid’s grandpa Dahir (57).

With a voice choked with tears he says today: “You just wanted to go to the lake. Then I heard that Agid had drowned – the worst news I have ever received. For the first time since I came to Germany, I wake up in the morning with the conscience that there is no more agid. It’s unbearable. “

The first grader was his grandfather’s favorite – and vice versa. Dahir: “Agid wanted me to come to the lake, but I was tired. Agid has two siblings, it is incomprehensible to them that they can no longer see their brother. How they suffer now – it breaks my heart. His mother is still in shock. I wish us a lot of strength so that we can cope with Agid’s death. “

According to the DLRG, the main reasons for fatal swimming accidents are carelessness and overconfidence. Rules for safe bathing are often ignored by both children and adults. But can an eight-year-old child do anything wrong at all? Does the family have to blame themselves for something?

What happened to Agid on that fateful Monday will no longer be clear. Somehow it must have fallen unnoticed from the bank into the lake. Deeper and deeper, until it finally went under – without anyone noticing. In the end, the time without oxygen was too long. Agid didn’t stand a chance.

Agid’s father Ali A. (33) is close to tears when he says to BILD: “My children were able to swim. We taught them how to do it, and in school they learn it too. I don’t know what really happened. I ask all families not to go to Inselsee with children. It is dangerous. And if you do, don’t let your children out of your sight – not a second! “

Agid will be buried in Lüneburg on Friday.
