The Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) has been awarded annually in Geneva since 2000. The award is considered the “Oscars of the watch world” and the most important award in the industry. The most coveted prize is the so-called “Aiguille d’Or”, which translates as “golden hand”.

A jury of 30 people is eligible to vote, including watchmakers, watch experts, collectors and journalists from all over the world.

However, it’s not just watches that are honored at the GPHG – people also have the chance to win a prize. This year, Svend Andersen and Vincent Calabrese won to found the Academie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants. This is an association dedicated to revitalizing traditional watchmaking with a particular focus on craftsmanship. It is intended to provide a platform for independent watchmakers who would otherwise miss out in a world dominated by industry.

Rolex, Patek Philippe and Swatch are not participating

In the gallery you can see all the watches that won an award this year. It is important to know that some brands are not represented at all – that is, they were not even available for selection. According to the specialist magazine “Dive Into Watches”, these include, for example, the Swatch Group with its 17 brands, Rolex and Patek Philippe. According to the report, this is because participation in the GPHG is voluntary and subject to payment. However, some brands traditionally never take part in awards.
