jpnn.com, JAKARTA – Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) Executive Board, Syafieq Alielha, assesses that the implementation of the 2024 presidential election is similar to the 1971 election in the New Order (Orba) era. The similarity between the two election editions is that they both use state instruments.

In the 1971 elections, said Syafieq, the driving engines were the Golongan Karya Party (Golkar) and ABRI. Meanwhile, in the 2024 elections or in the regime of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), the driving force is the National Police.

“In the 1971 elections, the machine used was first, of course, Golkar and second, ABRI. “The main thing is the military, the difference might be that if the 2024 election is at the forefront it will be the police, not the TNI,” said Syafieq at a book review event entitled NU, PNI, and the 1971 Election Violence by Ken Ward (1972) in the Cikini area, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (2/4).

Syafieq conveyed that the history of the 1971 election was repeated in the 2024 presidential election. According to him, the use of state tools has succeeded in winning certain parties in the 2024 political contestation, just as Golkar won in the 1971 election.

“In this book, we can find evidence that there were several things that played a role in why Golkar won so landslidely in 1971? “The TNI is practically gone,” said Syafieq.

Syafieq further stated that there was intimidation carried out by ABRI against kiai in the 1971 elections. It is also suspected that acts of intimidation were carried out by the authorities in the 2024 elections.

“I found many stories from our elders about how the 1971 election led to many kiai being intimidated by the Koramil, by the Kodim. And at that time there was Babinsa. “So, the result of the events of 1965, 1966, was that the army actually placed its troops in territorial areas,” he said.

Syafieq also highlighted the plan to establish 22 regional military commands (kodam) in the Jokowi era. According to him, this plan is vulnerable to abuse by elites and officers to carry out violence against the people themselves.

Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) Executive Board Syafieq Alielha conveyed the history of the 1971 election which will repeat itself in the 2024 presidential election.
