The film and television faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague was included in the list of the 15 best film schools in the world in the current issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. The French La Fémis, the Polish Lodz Film School and the Italian Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia also made the ranking. The Czech School cooperates with them and organizes exchange study stays.

“The Film and Television Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague can say that it inspired the film revolution. The Czechoslovak new wave of the 1960s arose primarily from its students such as Miloš Forman, Věra Chytilová, Jiří Menzel and Jaromil Jireš, who created a new, dark and funny perspective to life behind the Iron Curtain. A generation after the end of the Cold War, FAMU remains one of the leading European film schools,” says the justification for choosing the Prague school.

The Hollywood Reporter is an American weekly newspaper based in Los Angeles. It was founded in 1930 by businessman William Wilkerson. It prints profiles, original photos and interviews with personalities from the field of entertainment, film reviews or news from film festivals, analyzes of global trends or indicators of the entertainment industry, or information about Hollywood fashion and lifestyle.

“The placement in the rankings of one of the most respected film media in the world is both pleasing and binding,” responds Vít Schmarc, vice dean for external relations and development. “Not only with regard to the history that The Hollywood Reporter mentions, but also with regard to the significant achievements of our students in recent years. We are happy to have active cooperation with a number of selected schools, or are actively working to establish it,” he adds.

FAMU is one of the three faculties of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, alongside the theater DAMU and the music HAMU. It educates students primarily for professions related to film, photography, audiovisual, television, electronic media or traditional media.

In the academic year 2023/2024, FAMU opened a new educational program Film and Audiovisual Education, which aims to educate pedagogues qualified in cinematography and audiovisual, qualified to teach pupils of the second grades of primary and secondary schools.

The students of the Prague school also organize the student multi-genre Famufest every year. Thanks to this exhibition, the public always has the opportunity to see the latest and largely unavailable work of FAMU students.
