According to calculations by the comparison portal Verivox, the planned reduction in two surcharges for natural gas can lead to relief for customers – provided the reductions are passed on by the suppliers. The reduction in the control energy levy on October 1st means a relief of 122 euros at 20,000 kilowatt hours of annual consumption, as Verivox reported on Wednesday. There is also a further reduction on the same date, which amounts to eight euros.
“We assume that the majority of providers will pass on this price reduction,” said a Verivox spokesman. In existing contracts or in the basic service, however, it could be that this price change only arrives with a delay.
According to Verivox, consumers with an annual consumption of 20,000 kilowatt hours of gas currently have to pay an average of 2,500 euros a year. The reduction in the allocations by a total of 130 euros corresponds to a relief of a good five percent at these costs.
Trading Hub Europe (THE) is responsible for determining the surcharges and fees in the German gas market area. THE is a joint venture of the transmission system operators. It plays a central role, for example by enabling the gas companies to bill each other.
Control energy levy and conversion levy
Last week, THE announced, among other things, a reduction in the control energy levy from currently 0.57 cents per kilowatt hour (net) and the so-called conversion levy from currently 0.038 cents per kilowatt hour (net) to zero cents each. Both apply from October 1st.

The control energy surcharge is levied for costs that arise from the use of control energy, i.e. gas. It is used when the ratio between the amounts of gas fed in and fed out is not balanced. The conversion levy is about costs that THE incurs by adjusting the natural gas energy content to specific delivery areas.
